School Characteristics




A. Discipline Characteristics
This subject covers such research directions as foreign linguistics, foreign literature, translation and culture, applied linguistics, foreign language education, and foreign language teachers’ education and is one of the subjects that has a complete research direction among similar subjects across the nation. After long-term development, it has focused on the subject of language and literature, giving prominence to the key research points, and combining theory with practice.

The subject takes the study of language and literature as its core foundation and expands the research directions via translation studies, cultural studies and foreign language education research. The research on linguistic theory and literature has not only made great strides in theoretical research, but also provided strong theoretical support for translation studies, cultural studies, and foreign language education research, highlighting the important role of the subject of foreign languages in promoting cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries as well as socio-economic and cultural development.

B. Discipline Advantages
First, the discipline centers are well established and built on a solid foundation. Four secondary subjects have been authorized to confer master's degrees, among which the English Language and Literature and Russian Language and Literature were authorized to confer PhD degrees in 1986 and 1990, respectively, the earliest discipline centers conferring the PhD degree.

Second, the research directions are complete, and key subjects’ centers are focused. In the field of Linguistics, the strength of the Functional Linguistics is particularly strong, with its leading role strengthened by the academic influence and research team. In terms of the literary research, the study of English Poetry and Fiction, Narrative Studies, and the Study of Western Literary Theory have become increasingly influential within the country. Moreover, the study of Russian and Soviet Literature and the History of Russian Literary Criticism have a leading position at home. Furthermore, the study of Japanese Literature and the Comparative Study of
Chinese and Japan Literature have a major impact in the academic community. As for the innovation of translation theory, the translation theory (i.e. Harmony Theory) proposed by Professor Zheng Hailing has a broad impact in the field of translation study. The research on foreign language education and teacher education actively explore the approach to foreign language education and foreign language teacher training adapting to China's national conditions, with particular emphasis on carrying out research on pre- and post-position teacher development and the classroom teaching of primary and middle schools, which has a leading position within domestic research.

Third, the student-teacher ratio is appropriate. When compared with similar universities within China, the number of professors, supervisors for graduates, and teachers with doctorates within their appropriate fields ranks at the forefront.
